PWN Global Newsletter Q1 2020

HAPPY NEW YEAR, one and all!

Dear PWN friends,

Welcome to another PWN decade! We look forward to working with you to accelerate gender-balanced leadership in business and society.

Our mission continues and becomes increasingly important. At the same time, the world continues to evolve rapidly. In the last decade, gender balanced leadership and gender equality became a much talked about topic. The campaigns, hashtags and the rise of women's empowerment networks and communities have demonstrated the need for men and women to work side by side towards a balanced society.

Last autumn, during our diversity lab in Dublin, we discussed the need to pay attention to the rise of technology. We know that our world is constantly changing but the pace of change has increased exponentially with technology becoming one of the influencing determining factors of how our society develops. The rate at which we must adopt and adapt to new technology far outpaces 10, 20 or 50 years ago. People expect things to change rapidly, which means our pace of change needs to accelerate as well.

Emerging technologies like AI, Blockchain and Quantum are continuing to impact our world more than we can imagine. The way this technology is designed and implemented determines how we shape our future but also how gender, ethnicity and age, like many other differentiators, will be incorporated without increasing inequality and biases.

At this moment, only 15 per cent of women have a role in the design and deployment of AI-based solutions, which inevitably can cause biases in automated processes and decision making structures. Aside from design and development and other IT-related jobs, it will take us more than 200 years to achieve full equality in the workplace. Wouldn't it be great if we, the PWN community, could speed up this change? If we can make little changes that we can call our legacy.

Again, our mission continues, creating awareness, reaching out to help make a change and shine a light on the people who are role models and ambassadors for our cause.

As one of the female leaders of a worldwide travel company states:

"There is an essential need for female leadership to help achieve a truly balanced workforce across the technology industry. As we know, more female leaders and women on boards helps lead to greater creativity and less groupthink and provides a broader view when making key decisions. But most importantly, more female leaders mean more role models for young women and girls, which is simply critical if we want to achieve parity."  Gillian Tans, Chairwomen, Booking.com

We invite you to join us on our journey towards a world where gender-balanced leadership is the norm. We would like to welcome you to join us at our Gender Balanced Leadership Awards Ceremony in Dublin, or at one of the many events across our city networks around the world.

Enjoy this edition and please remember to forward it to your friends and colleagues who you think will enjoy it too.

Many thanks and best regards for a wonderful new year!
