Institute for Women’s Leadership Announces Winners of the Guys Who Get It Awards

Executives from leading organizations such as Thomson Reuters, City of San Francisco and HP Inc. honored as top male executives championing women’s leadership - including PWN Global Board Member, Rob Baker.

San Francisco, CA – [December 13, 2016] The Institute for Women’s Leadership (IWL) today announced the recipients of the Guys Who Get It Awards. The first annual awards from IWL will recognize male C-level executives of top companies and government organizations who are successfully establishing gender equality as a cultural norm in their workplaces. Their teams demonstrate gender balance at work is not only possible, but is already in place in their organizations – and with impressive results.

“Women hold only 4.2 percent of CEO positions in America’s 500 biggest companies,” said Rayona Sharpnack, founder and CEO of IWL. “Gender equality is not only a social issue, it also provides a competitive edge. The awardees have recognized that with women making 80 percent of consumer buying decisions – including in the automotive and computer sectors – gender equality across all levels of their companies makes good business sense.”

To celebrate and share the best practices of these powerful allies in the Gender Partnership™ movement, the Institute for Women’s Leadership is presenting their first annual Guys Who Get It Awards in San Francisco on January 26, 2017. The event will include a Legacy Award, for an industry leader who has dedicated his career to diversity and inclusion. This year’s Legacy Awardee is:

  • Ted Childs, who retired from IBM in 2006 with a distinguished 39 year career as a member of the IBM corporate Human Resources team.

The Guys Who Get It awardees are:

  • Astellas - EVP, Regulatory Affairs,  Clinical and Research Quality Assurance, William Fitzsimmons
  • City of San Francisco - Mayor Ed Lee
  • HP Inc. - Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Antonio Lucio
  • PG&E - EVP of Corporate Services and Human Resources John Simon
  • Sodexo Inc. - CEO of Schools, North America Stephen Dunmore
  • Thomson Reuters - EVP & CIO Rick King

The honorees have been selected based on the impact of their leadership on gender equality, their track record working toward advancing female leaders for at least five years, and because their leadership teams are above industry standard for female team membership, ranging from 28 to 40 percent.

The event also includes an Honorable Guy award for top executives who have been working toward gender equality for fewer than five years, but with substantial success. The recipients are:

  • Visa Europe - VP Global Human Resources Bill Ingham
