Middle managers take a lot of flak. The comic strip Dilbert and TV show The Office elicit knowing belly laughs. Many people bash middle management as waste, overhead, bloat, and worse. But a different perspective holds that middle managers make the world go round. According to this view, middle managers—at least the good ones—are absolutely necessary for organizational success. Much of today’s management literature focuses on top CEOs, elevating some of them to celebrity cult status.
